The feature for downloading files from another site worked fine when I tried it yesterday, but it doesn't seem to be working at all the few times I've tried it today. No error messages, but the page refreshed as though it was going through the motions of doing something, but the remote files didn't appear in my file list. Could the service be running up against its own bandwidth limits already?

I was just trying out that same feature and the same thing occured. Perhaps the download request is getting queued. I'd give it a half day and check back.

This is one feature that is too good to last.

works fine for me, maybe it is the site you are downloading from?

one thing I did notice, is if you have a smaller file, the web page sites longer doing something (downloading I assume) because then it comes back, says it was done, X amount of time. with larger files, it just thinks for a couple seconds and I have control of the page again. I see the file in my file manager, but it is not complete - I keep refreshing to watch it grow.

perhaps there is some type of notification I am not seeing or blocking by chance?

[edit]
I see it now, right in front of me. it tells you that it goes into the background, it does not seem to depend on the file size, however, so maybe it has to do with some type of queue or load?

Actually it's really not unsustainable if you look at two things

1) Disk space is pretty cheap now days
2) Disk space is going to be almost irrelavant when sun releases their 128 bit OS and their ZFS file system. Filespace will increase 16 billion times over 32 or 64 bit file systems.

So it's actually a good marketing plug to gain users.

1) Cheap but not free - it still has to be paid for somehow.

2) 128 bit OS will only increase the addressable file space. It does not obviate the need to supply the physical space in the first place.

True but I think it can be done, there is a chance they could run into problems. But having the ability to address that amount of real estate removes a good chunk of cost. I think providers are playing the odds like the all you can eat buffet restaurant, high users and low end users.

I just don't really think that it's not all that implausible

Heinz Tschabitscher at email.about.com link place them as 4 in his Top 10 Free Email Services.

I know some of us don't always agree with his judgements

One example he place aim.com email at 5 in his list and says about them that they have no ... IMAP access). We know they have imap cause we use it.

Do we know more now about http://www.shinyfeet.com/ chances to survive?

What's in it for them?

Ha! Everybody seems to think I am an American or Canadian citizen! cause her is what they say in the Sign Up

well my swedish Zip is valid in European Union for sure. So do they expect me to lie about where I live?

They're no longer even in the top ten list, perhaps not surprisingly, while the "news" on the shinyfeet main page now boasts:
Quote:
ShinyFeet formerly ranked #4 in About.com's Top 10 Free Email Services
Formerly? How's that for grasping at straws to quote praise of their service?

But, having been unable to access my shinyfeet mailbox or file store for several days now, as logging into my account has only brought up a blank page, on attempting to log in again today, I finally got something other than a blank page in the form of the following message:
Quote:
Your account has been deleted due to violation of ShinyFeet's inactivity period.
This is to prevent users from signing up, filling up their inbox with lists
and other resource consuming content and forget or infrequently access this content.
As ShinyFeet offers an unlimited FREE service beyond what any competitor offers, we must
ensure our users frequently utilize these services. We may offer a premium (pay) service
that will not have an inactivity period in the future.
Although I can't recall reading of a specific "inactivity period", since I've been logging into my account on a fairly frequent basis, up until I began having problems a few days ago, perhaps this might be taken as an example of one of the true limitations of so-called "unlimited" space. (Another possible example being the case of bluehome.net, as currently under discussion here.)

I have been using Shinyfeet for over a month, I used nearly all services and it has been working fine for me (webdisk, email, url retrieval). if I can find anything at fault that could only be the cluttered interface with adverts, but since it is a free service I can't really complaint about that, someone has to pay the bills.

I had the same question about https login and I emailed their support service which replied in 24 hrs and told me that the https only works during login to encrypt the password after that it is a normal http session

So far I would reccomend it if you do not mind being bombarded with advertsiments on the interface

Just be sure you have a backup of the files you stored there. It doesn't sound reliable in certain areas.

And if you don't mind risking your account suddenly being deleted without warning, apparently for nothing more than actually using "too much" of your supposedly "unlimited" space.

In my opinion, based on my experience with it, this service is basically fraudulent, in not actually allowing the one thing it's primarily "touted" for.

I didn't know about that...obviously if that has happened to you, you are right and I would not reccomend to anybody use a service that advertises unlimited free space and then deletes your account because you use too much of it...

What are you guys/gals talking about? SkinyFeed seems to be closed... did I miss something?

From the site::

ShinyFeet Has Closed - Jan 29th, 2006

It is a sad day for us here at ShinyFeet. Unfortunately we are left with no choice but to shutdown until we can find funding.

Our business model was simple, provide the users of the world Unlimited email space with useful integrated tools (File Manager, etc.) for FREE with advertisers footing the bill.

The bad part was too many users abused the system and our advertisers saw little support.

There were a handful of users that gave us great praise and loved ShinyFeet, and we hope to be back for you.

All email data and files will be removed in 72 hours. Users that frequented ShinyFeet will have time to get their data off, most that barely logged in will have their data wiped.
