Gmail discontinued?

I read that Google seem to want to discontinue Gmail, I hope they plan for a migration tool in their plan as I have been using Gmail for a while.

See article at http://www.computerworld.com/article...ace-gmail.html.

It's also why I believe Google will kill Gmail as soon as it comes up with a mediated alternative everyone loves. Of course, Google may offer an antiquated "Gmail view" as a semi-obscure alternative to the default "Inbox"-like mediated experience.
This fellow isn't suggesting that the Gmail service will go away, only that the web interface we know as Gmail will go away to be replaced with a smart view system that moves more smarts into the client.

Will Google find a "mediated alternative everyone loves?" Clearly not everyone, which is why he postulates there will be a view that is still much the same as exists today.

Gmail isn't going away, even in his model. E-mail is too basic to net communication.

But yes, the client has moved forward and will continue to. The multiple inboxes have showed up, been deployed across platforms and no one is complaining, maybe because you can turn them off if desired.

Will Google continue to experiment with "more mediation" in the client, more smarts in the system to help users process information more effectively? Sure.

Does that mean the end of the Gmail service? Not as long as we still have to get notices about shipping delays and such. . .

Read comments following the original article. Words like "silly", "dumb" are aplenty - rightly so IMHO

It just goes to show, that in order to sell a magazine, you just need a good buzzline.

This isn't Google's first attempt at this. We'll see if Inbox makes it go better but all of the other attempts didn't really go so well.
